Tyson was born when Tony the Scribe watched an interview by boxing legend Mike Tyson. The boxer discussed his shame at having lived a life of violence and revealed that raising pigeons has always been his greatest passion. He told a story of raising pigeons as a child in a broken home, until one day a bully snapped one of their necks. In anger, Tyson threw the first punch of his life. The song Tyson uses this story as a frame for discussing the imperfections of love and the terrible things that can come of it, ultimately making peace with both the hope and despair love creates. This is all set against a dynamic, gradually building instrumental which begins with a simple piano sample and ends in a cacophonous chorus of affected drums and choral singing. Tyson is the last song on Janus, but is both the center of the record and a full story in its own right.

lyrics

Lyrics:
The first thing I ever loved was a bird
Chose flight when the fight was immersive
Saw life unalike from the worms
Flew free from the dirt with a purpose
When her wing bones cracked so infirm
I cradled her curves
And my nerves burned wordless
Dumb with the courage
Numb from the first kiss
Takin my first breaths
Under the surface
Fluid in my lungs
And my heart in my head
Reckless and young
You can rest when you’re dead
And we step to the sins
And begin black magic
seizing moments
To seem less passive
Used to method act to deter the attachments
Trapped as a splash of paint on the canvas
Now I live in words, can’t help but be candid
Still fragile as her heat on my mattress

First time I drew blood for her safety
Patient in the wingspan, love for the changelings
Born in warm chains singing songs that the slaves sing
Never sensing the safety I had was escaping
Unrestrained as the daybreak shade
When it wakes with the first of the flames
Night is so tame
Brightness is painful
We cling to our knives just to try and stay stable
Living out the fable
That love is respect
But love is a shotgun pressed to your head
Forces you to bend
and contort with the winds
And conform to the spins
That the world will beset
Defensive intents
Can get bent to the ends
Tangled with the tension
of air we ascend
When your bones light as the breeze on your skin
Wax wings catch heat and the freefall begins

Here we are
Burning up in our cars
And in our hearts
Better days
Sleeping late with our headaches
Perfect weather
Congregate
Lay in wait for an answer
We're still waiting
Grit your teeth
The lucky taste as the day breaks
The blind are leading the blind

The first time I drew blood for protection
And the second I drew blood from the tears
The third time I drew blood for respect
The last time I drew blood to disappear
I’m at the end of my road of good intentions
Where hindsight makes it all stand clear
Wish I knew when I built the defenses
That the worst things always come from your fears

The first time I drew blood for protection
And the second I drew blood from the tears
The third time I drew blood for respect
The last time I drew blood to disappear
I’m at the end of my road of good intentions
Where hindsight makes it all stand clear
Wish I knew when I built the defenses
That the worst things always come from your fears

Settle up my head
Level with my flesh
Steady up my breaths
Sketch it in my pen
Embed it in my skin
I will tell it how I live
I will yell it to the wind
I will let it pull me in
Fix up my wings
I will sing
I will see what the daybreak brings
Until I drop dead
And then I will step
Until my fists rest
Until my soul glows like tips of cigarettes

Settle up my head
Level with my flesh
Steady up my breaths
Sketch it in my pen
Embed it in my skin
i will tell it how I live
I will yell it to the wind
I will let it pull me in
Fix up my wings
I will sing
I will see what the daybreak brings
Til I drop dead
And then I will step
Until my fists rest
Until my soul glows like tips of cigarettes

Settle up my head
Level with my flesh
Steady up my breaths
I will never hurt again
Embed it in my skin
I will tell it how I live
I will yell it to the wind
I will let it pull me in
Fix up my wings
I will sing
I will see what the daybreak brings
Til I drop dead
And then I will step
We sink til we swim
And we all fall awake in the end
